Sailing starlet scoops national title

FREDDIE Connor has made his major breakthrough on the sailing scene by winning a national title.

The rising star from Bexhill Sailing Club was victorious in the Irish National Topper Championship at the weekend.

Father David said: "He sailed very well and it's a career highlight without a doubt, but it's been coming for a while."

The 14-year-old, pictured, accrued 16 points over the three days of competition to win by two from home competitor Chris Penny. Reigning World Champion Andrew Brown was third on 20.

Freddie achieved two wins, three seconds, a third, a fifth and a black flag from the eight races in which he competed at Wexford Sailing Club.

He and the rest of the British squad members had to leave early because of the vigilant airport security and so couldn't take part in the final race.

This meant Freddie had to take the no show and the black flag as his two discards, but his other results were sufficient to be crowned champion.

He has also finished ninth in the World Championship and 16th in the British Championship this summer in addition to leading the South East Championship. What's more, the St Bede's School pupil will be back in the national squad next year when more big things will be expected.

Two of Freddie's club-mates also impressed at the national championships at the National Sailing Centre in Weymouth. Ben Slater finished 14th in the same class and Emily Wilson was 19th in the regatta fleet.
