Selsey bid for their own slice of FA Cup history

SELSEY hope to create history on Saturday when they travel to Surrey for an FA Cup second qualifying round clash at Walton Casuals.

The Blues have never made it beyond this stage of the famous competition in 28 attempts, and after last weekend's FA Vase defeat to Camberley Town, victory would provide a timely boost for Danny Hinshelwood's side.

Just three games from a potential dream tie against the likes of Brighton, Southampton or Sven Goran Eriksson's Notts County, the financial benefit for Saturday's victors is lucrative '“ the winners will collect 4,500.

Despite a healthy run in last year's Vase, Selsey's recent FA Cup record is more modest '“ they last featured in the second qualifying round in 2003 when Hastings United were 4-1 winners.

For Walton, the game represents unchartered territory as this season's run '“ including a 2-1 win over Pagham at Nyetimber Lane '“ is the best in their short history.

Since forming in 1992, the Casuals have climbed the pyramid, winning the Combined Counties League in 2004-05, and they currently sit 11th in division one south of the Ryman League.

Selsey will need Ross Woolf to maintain his terrific form if they are to impose themselves on the tie. The winger already has eight goals to his name this season, including four in his past two outings.
