Side saddle elegance at show

A BALCOMBE horse and rider caught the eye during the recent Jane Hallett Costume Concours d' Elegance Side Saddle championship at the South of England Show.

Hillymead Cabaret, a seven-year-old Connemara stallion, owned by Mrs Carol Dutton finished an extremely creditable fifth in the event - despite being a relative newcomer to side saddle, and was a favourite with spectators.

He was ridden in the event by Carol's daughter, Jessica (20), who wore a striking kingfisher blue costume from a design in an 1890 print.

Carol explained: "It was only the second time he has carried a side saddle and going into the main arena was a big thing for him.

"I've had him since he was a six-month old foal and broke him in and brought him on. Jessica has been hunting him and he is a lovely pony.
