Wheatsheaf heavily fined over 'Ager Affair'

SUNDAY parks club Little Common Wheatsheaf have been heavily fined after club members locked a referee in the changing room.

Wheatsheaf players blamed official Neil Ager for their Hastings & East Sussex League Demarco Cup defeat against Oddfellows because he added a lengthy period of stoppage time to the game.

Oddfellows grabbed a last gasp equaliser and eventually won the match on penalties.

As no individuals admitted keeping Ager against his will, Wheatsheaf took responsibility as a club and were ordered to pay 200 by the Sussex FA, and they will be charged a similar amount by the local league.

Wheatsheaf are also in trouble for playing three matches while suspended, but SFA chief executive Ken Benham said there were mitigating circumstances surrounding the suspension so the FA fine would be greatly reduced.

League secretary Robin Powell said Wheatsheaf and all the clubs players would be banned from all Sussex matches - except Rich Sussex County League and Dr Martens games - until all fines are paid.

The league is still considering excluding the club for the Ager affair.
