Steyning Jazz Club presents Sussex saxophonist Charlotte Glasson and her band on Friday, November 4.

Club spokesman Colin Jilks said: “She is an instrumentalist par excellence, playing all the saxophones, flutes, clarinet, bass clarinet, violin and viola. Versatile contemporary jazz and diverse originals are all laced with her bluesy, expressive sax work; indeed, her witty, exuberant, genre-defying music restores one’s faith in true jazz . She brings together the vast and varied creative influences that inform her music, with New Orleans, gypsy jazz, South African township, Latin and world music, all contributing to her captivating musical make-up. The band line-up will be: Charlotte Glasson, saxes; Mark Bassey, trombone; Chris Kibble, piano; Lloyd Coote, tuba and double bass; and Sam Glasson, drums. Her band has to date released eight recordings, and this current Jazz Services supported tour will see Charlotte and her musicians promoting the release of their latest studio manifestation, Bonito recorded in January 2022 and released in June. Having performed at a number of high-profile festi vals around the UK, Charlotte’s winning blend of groovy musicianship saw her collect the Best Newcomer Award at the 2009 Marlborough Jazz Festival; but while undoubtedly deserved, she is surely outgrowing such plaudits and UK audiences will be offered the prospect of catching a seasoned UK jazz star on the rise. Charlotte started playing the violin at the age of five, got a guitar when she was seven, teaching herself how to play, and then got a saxophone for Christmas when she was twelve. Charlotte went on to study m usic at Kingston University, after which she progressed into a career as a session musician, bandleader and composer/arranger.”

The bar is provided by Riverside Brewery, doors open at 7.15pm and the show begins at 8pm. Steyning Jazz Club meets at The Steyning Centre, Fletcher’s Croft, Steyning. BN44 3XZ.
