Lib Dem councillor celebrates huge Southbourne by-election victory
Southbourne's newly elected district councillor - Liberal Democrat Jonathan Brown - says he feels privileged to have been voted in by a huge majority.
Cllr Brown won the Southbourne by-election on Thursday, December 1, stealing the seat from the Conservatives with 58 per cent of the vote and a majority of 357.
He said: “I am privileged to have been elected to serve on Chichester District Council on behalf of the residents of Southbourne.
“I am grateful to the residents for the confidence they have expressed in me and I look forward to ensuring that Southboune, Prinsted, Nutbourne, Hermitage and Thorney Island have a strong voice on the council.”
The by-election was triggered when former Southbourne ward councillor and cabinet member for support services, cllr Bruce Finch, stepped down last month.
Cllr Brown polled 646 votes, ahead of David Harwood (Conservatives) with 289; Patricia Hunt (UKIP) with 123; and Rebecca Hamlet (Labour) with 53 votes.
Cllr Brown is already a Southbourne parish councillor, chairman of the Southbourne Environment Group and a member of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group.
He put his overwhelming victory down to years of hard work on behalf of residents, and promised to deal with a wide range of issues identified during his campaign, including parking problems in the Lumley and Hermitage area, flooding and planning issues in the ward.
Cllr Brown said he would now be producing and online newsletter and delivering regular leaflets to residents in the Southbourne ward.
